THE CHAMP: "OLD MAN" SHANER SLAMS HIS WAY TO VICTORY
Sunday,
June 21, 2009 (Wind Lake, WI USA) by Paul
Fladten-Wisconsin Combat Sports
Wisconsin Cage Fighting's inaugural show "Battle at the Bleachers" electrified
a raucous crowd on Saturday night at Kelly's Bleachers II in Wind Lake.
The
card featured 17 exciting fights, 10 of which ended in the first
round. In one of the night's two professional bouts, Gladiators
Heavyweight Champion Reese "Old Man" Shaner sent the
crowd home happy after he retained his belt with a huge slam of
Demian "The Coroner" Decorah.
Main Events:
Gladiators Cage Fighting Heavyweight Championship Fight
It was obvious from the opening bell that Shaner had the better skill set than
Decorah. Shaner held his opponent against the cage, and used his single leg
takedowns throughout the first three rounds to keep control of the fight.
As the fourth round began, it was clear that Decorah was exhausted. Reese once
again pushed Demian against the cage, but instead of taking him down, lifted
him over his head and slammed him in the center of the cage. After the slam,
Decorah grabbed his ribs and alerted the referee that he was unable to continue.
After the battle, the pro-Shaner crowd erupted and began chanting "Reese" as
he raised his championship belt for all to see.
Sam Alvey vs. Trae Mittnacht
To say that the crowd was in favor of "Smiling" Sam Alvey would be
a gross understatement. And the audience's favorite fighter did not disappoint
on Saturday night. Alvey's opponent, Trae Mittnacht, took the fight on short
notice after Rob Smith and another replacement opponent both had to withdraw
because of an injury.
In the opening moments of the battle, Mittnacht connected on a crisp combination
of punches that sent Alvey's mouthguard halfway across the ring. Yet, "Smiling
Sam" was able to recover and take Mittnacht to the ground. Alvey used
his power to capture the full mount position over his opponent. In an attempt
to escape the full mount, Mittnacht gave his back to Alvey. From there, the
fan favorite proceeded to pelt the sides of Mittnacht's face until the ref
called a halt to the fight.
After the fight, Alvey looked every part of his nickname has the thanked his
family and friends in the audience, and shook the hand of nearly everyone around
the cage.
Gladiators
Cage Fighting Light Heavyweight Grappling Championship
In a clash for the vacant 205 pound grappling championship, referee Eric "Red" Schaefer
awarded Scott Huston the belt over Justin "Bacon" Hutter. Huston
was able to hold a triangle choke for an extended period of time and bloody
the nose of his opponent before Schaeffer was forced to decide the winner.
Fight of the Night
While both of the Shaner and Alvey fights were impressive, Fight of the Night
honors went to amateurs Jason "Black Mamba" Norman and John Gunn.
The fight was an absolute slugfest that saw both men in danger throughout.
In the beginning of the fight, Gunn connected on a barrage of wild punches
to the chin of "Black Mamba." But right as it seemed that Norman
was about to lose the fight, he uncorked his own round of overhand lefts and
rights.
The fight went back and forth two more times in this manner, until Norman caught
Gunn with a right hand flush to the jaw. Gunn fell to the canvas and the fight
was stopped three seconds before the first round ended. It was a brutal, spectacular
battle.
KO of the Night
There was a multitude of knockouts to choose from on Saturday, but the most
impressive came from Luiz Ramirez.
When
the opening bell sounded, Ramirez charged at his opponent Howard "The
Hurricane" Davis and connected with a huge right hand. Davis
proceeded to drop to the ground, and Ramirez landed two more shots
to his head before the referee could call a stop to the fight.
When Davis awoke, he claimed that he was fine and was only hit once during
the fight. But it was clear that he had been knocked out completely, and was
unable to intelligently defend himself.
Submission of the Night
Jose Pacheco pulled off a spectacular armbar against Ryan "The Lion" Kruckle
early in the night, but the submission of the night has to be awarded to Reese "Old
Man" Shaner for his vicious slam of Demian Decorah. The slam was a fantastic
finish to a fantastic night of fights.

O'MALLEY
LOOKS HANDSOME IN GLADIATORS MIDDLEWEIGHT BELT
DOWNES, FIGUEROA, FOLEY, SCHIESE LEAD "GOOD, BAD
& UGLY" HIT PARADE
Monday,
March 16, 2009 (Milwaukee, WI USA) By Stuart Francart, WI
Combat Sports: Gladiators: O'Malley Takes The Belt
Gladiators Cage Fighting “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” rocked
the house at Wisconsin State Fair Park Saturday. The card featured
24 MMA bouts (and grappling matches) with nine of those bouts being
professional. Pat O’Malley returned to the ring and showed
his intention to keep his winning ways alive by becoming the Gladiators
Middleweight Champion in a bout
against
Karl Turek.
Main
Events:
Middleweight
Championship Fight - “Handsome” Pat
O’Malley looked like he was in trouble
at the start of the first round when Karl Turek pinned him up against
the cage and started to battle with a series of knees. O’Malley
returned with body strikes and some knees of his own and the
two ended up switching positions up against the cage throughout
most of the round.
The
two fighters were eventually broken up by Referee Al Wichgers
and O’Malley
saw his opening. Turek shot in and O’Malley unleashed,
getting Turek's backside were he applied a stern rear naked
choke forcing
Turek to tap out at 3:59 of the first round.
LaSavage
vs. Figueroa -
Unfortunately, “Savage” Dan LaSavage wasn’t given
much of a chance against Strasser’s Ismael Figueroa.
Figueroa immediately took the fight into his own hands, dodging
a punch from
LaSavage and slamming him into the ground. LaSavage attempted
a guillotine, but missed on the attempt. From there he
took a beating
as his opponent punched him relentelessly.
LaSavage
managed to get some control to slow the carnage and landed
an up-kick
that allowed him
to get off his back and up onto his feet. LaSavage tried
to work a takedown on Figueroa, but failed and ended up
on his back again. From
there LaSavage was able to do little, but almost cinched
an arm bar from guard that was once again unsuccessful.
Figueroa
put more punishment
to LaSavage, as he curled up like a turtle and protected
his head, unable to answer any of Figueroa’s
hits. Referee Wichgers came in and stopped the fight
at 4:22 seconds,
giving Figueroa
another
win
to his untarnished record.
"Fight
of the Night"
The
"Fight of the Night" goes to “Danny Boy” Downes
and Jake “The
Bad” Omen. The fight was unkind to Omen who
constantly ate numerous punches, but showed heart
by staying in the fight,
consistently looking for a takedown that he never
got.
The
first round started with a quick exchange, but Downes pinned
Omen up against the cage. From
there
Downes threw
several knees, punches
and elbows with Omen being able to do give little
back. Omen attempted several takedowns, but Downes defended
them and continued
his assult without mercy.
The
second round didn’t
look much better for Omen as he was already
battered, but still had the power to
go on. Downes
unleashed once
again, dominating with brutal elbows to Omen's
face. Omen had little if any
return other than a takedown attempt that he
ended up paying for, as Downes beat Omen
to the ground
forcing Referee Wichgers to intervene.
Downes took the victory at 2:42 in the second.
"Knockout
of the Night"
Donovan “Recon” Foley
wins the "Knockout of the Night" when all he had to do
was walk in the ring, size up
his opponent and wait
for the horn to sound. And when the horn
blasted, Foley moved in and threw a solid right hook and
connected just right
and put
Jeremy
Hemrich
down and out of the fight at :12 seconds
into the 1st round.
"Submission
of the Night"
"Submission
of the Night" belongs to Mike Biddle in his grappling match
with
Angel Quinones.
Quinones thought
it would be
a good idea to jump
into guard at the start of the match,
but Biddle proved
him wrong. Biddle quickly locked
in a guillotine choke and submitted
his
opponent :46 seconds into the match.

"MORE SEASON'S BEATINGS" DELIVERS THE HOLIDAY SOCKINGS!!!
Monday,
December 15, 2008 (Milwaukee, WI USA) By Juan
Lozano, ESPN
Deportes 1510-Milwaukee: On
Saturday, December 13, 2008, Gladiators Cage Fighting held a
spectacular Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition appropriately
named “More
Seasons Beatings” at Milwaukee Harley-Davidson in front
of a large and energetic crowd.
MMA
is a fabulous combat sport that combines various fighting and
combat disciplines and styles, and includes skill in Martial
Arts such as Kickboxing, Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling.
The
size of the venue permitted intimate seating, with no bad seat
at the event. This allowed the enthusiastic fans to
get a great view
of all the action. There was not one bad seat at the event.
Concessions were inexpensive and between fight entertaining was
spectacular.
In sum, it was a perfect way to spend a wet and windy mid-December
Saturday
night.
While
all the fights were entertaining and contained exclusively Wisconsin-based
talent, the already boisterous crowd
got loudest
for the main event,
a Super Heavyweight (+265 lbs) Championship match featuring
the young, twenty-year old, 308 pound, Dan “The Vanilla Gorilla” Edwards
and the older, more experienced, “Big Papi” Paul
Martinez (left).
This
3 round bout was action-packed and the raucous crowd cheered
loudly with chants of “Papi! Papi!” to
support Martinez, while all others were enthused about the
exuberance and fighting spirit
demonstrated by the younger opponent, the aptly named “Vanilla
Gorilla.”
Martinez
dominated most of the action. He shoved his opponent repeatedly
into the cage and demonstrated
surprisingly
fast hand speed. Martinez’s
left jabs and overhand rights dotted his younger opponent’s
face. Martinez supplemented his assault with brutal knees
to Edwards’ face.
Martinez took the fight to the ground in the third round
and Martinez continued to dominate the fight with elbows
now being
used, as well
as fists, to pummel Edwards. This left the referee Al
Wichgers with no choice but to stop the fight and award
Martinez the
victory and title belt.
Other
highlights of the evening included appearances from UFC stars such
as Eric “Red” Schafer,
as well as, the participation of Latino fighters such
as Mike Sanchez from Racine and
Anthony "Showtime" Pettis from Milwaukee.
Sanchez
was defeated by Danny Downes (right) in the 2nd round due to referee
stoppage as a result of Downes’ repeated punches.
Pettis
(left) completely dominated his opponent, Gabe Wallbridge. The
fight ended in the
1st round with the referee
stopping the contest
due
to Pettis’ dominance in the fight. Wallbridge
was clearly frustrated at the end of the fight
as he had a heated discussion
with his corner,
while simultaneously grasping his ribs which appeared
to have been injured in the match.
Mixed
Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the
United States, with increasing Latino
fans and
participants. Many train where Martinez, Schafer, Pettis
and Downes train, the Duke Roufus Academy (milwaukeemma.com)
on North 76th St & Bluemound Road in Milwaukee.
In
fact, the cable channel, ESPN Deportes has announced plans to air
a MMA show entitled,
Bellator
Fighting Championships
beginning
in AprIL
Gladiators Cage Fighting has not confirmed the date of their next
event, but we will be sure to inform the Hispanic community
of
Milwaukee when
the
next contest is.
El
Conquistador and ESPN Deportes 1510 would love to hear more
about local sports in Milwaukee.

ROB
SMITH'S :16 SECOND RECIPE FOR DISASTER
SHORT RIGHT ENDS NIGHT FOR HUTTER
Tuesday,
August 5, 2008 (Milwaukee, WI USA) Written by Nate Schafer (Courtesy
of WI Combat Sports) Gladiators Fighting hosted its first outdoor
event "MMA In The Cage" on the Main Stage of the 2008
WI State Fair in West Allis, (WI) last evening-the first time MMA
has been featured as a Main Stage attraction at the fair.
The
forecast called for severe weather, and a thunderstorm watch was
issued for Milwaukee and surrounding counties, but the only thing
severe were the beat downs in the cage.
The
card featured nine bouts (including a Gladiators Fighting Light
Heavyweight -205 lbs MMA title fight) and an eclectic mix of eighteen
fighters from twelve different gyms throughout the state and Midwest.
Here’s a recap of the night's action:
The
evening began with a couple of amateur bouts. First up was Joe
Schwane of Adrian Serrano’s Combat Gym in Milwaukee taking
on Brad Andersen of Tengu MMA in Slinger, (WI). The first two rounds
of the fight had Schwane scoring takedowns and executing ground
and pound while Anderson looked to stop the fight using guillotine
choke attempts.
Fast-forward
to round three and Andersen starts the action with a kick and a
combo flurry of punches. Schwane takes the fight to the ground
using a trip takedown, but Andersen finally gets the guillotine
sunk in and Schwane was forced to tap at :31 seconds in round three.
"Submission
of the Night:"
If
there was a story to be told in the fight card, the second match
contained it. Ricky “The Wart” Dubiak of Roufusport,
the only West Allis resident on the card and self described, “slightly
overweight nerdy kid”, was the West Allis version of “Rudy” last
night and the crowd loved him.
Having
recently defeated David Daleo in a grappling match on Friday, Dubiak
took this fight, his first ever MMA bout, on a day's notice and
after working a shift at the fair against a tough looking guy with
tribal armband tattoos and a big height advantage.
When
undefeated Andrew Trochazka of Shark Bite MMA in Jefferson, (WI)
entered the cage, he looked like he had come to steal Dubiak’s
lunch money and cave his head in, but the grappling phenom wasn’t
having it. Dubiak looked like a crazed maniac, scoring multiple
takedowns and getting the back of Trochazka, forcing a tapout from
a rear naked choke at :57 seconds into the fight.
With
only a few weeks before Dubiak leaves the land of cheese for the
land of 10,000 lakes, he gets himself a win in front of the hometown
fans, Submission of the Night, and a story to take with him to
help him pick up chicks in Minnesota.
In
a 205 lb Muay Thai match, Tim “Arch Angel” Nixon of
the Haus of Combat in Green Bay, (WI) needed only :96 seconds to
TKO Harold “The Hammer” Johnson of Milwaukee. Knees
to the face dropped Johnson the first two time, but Johnson was
able to get back to his feet. In the final stanza, Nixon throws
a high kick and Johnson ducks to avoid, but Nixon follows with
an uppercut to drop Johnson to the canvas for the third time. Nixon
wins the match and will fight Jason “Kaz” Kazmierczak
in an MMA match in October.
"Fight
of the Night:"
In
the fight of the night Marco Daniels of Kenosha, (WI) faced off
against Marc Freidrich of Adrian Serrano’s Combat Gym in
a 145 lb Featherweight scrap. Freidrich started the action with
a hard right hook, but was then dropped by a right cross from Daniels.
Freidrich
survives a guillotine attempt by Daniels and begins to unleash
a lot of ground and pound. As he’s dishing out punishment
from the top he takes the advice from his corner and drops into
a heel hook giving up his dominant position for a high-risk submission;
he then spends the rest of the round on the bottom with Daniels
almost getting his back as the round ends.
Round
two begins with Freidrich scoring a takedown and another guillotine
attempt by Daniels. Freidrich easily gets full mount, then gets
Daniels back where he secures what looks to a painful neck crank
causing Daniels to tap at 1:17 into the round.
"Knockout
of the Night:"
Aaron “Tower” Toll
of Unified Martial Arts in Fond du Lac, (WI) showed he’s
ready for the pros by taking on and defeating Rashad Brooks of
Miletich Fighting Systems, Bettendorf, (IA). Brooks who is (3-5)
seemed to engage a strategy that involved eating about twenty unanswered
shots to the head including knees, elbows, and punches before firing
back one of his own.
When
Brooks did throw back he was looking for the one punch knockout
and it landed multiple times, but Toll showed he is tough and can
take a shot. Toll had full mount many times throughout the bout
and Brooks was good at sneaking out the back door, but offensively
he had little to offer.
What
was most impressive was the sheer amount of punishment that Brooks
took without ever falling down. I wouldn’t doubt that Toll
landed at least fifty knees to the head of Brooks when all was
said and done. In the third round, referee Al Wichgers stopped
the bout after Toll scores multiple jumping knees that landed cleanly.
After the fight was stopped Brooks finally fell down and took a
long time to get back up.
I
was very impressed with Toll’s cardio, knees from the clinch,
and his ability to listen to and take instructions from his corner
throughout the fight despite it being only his first pro fight.
On the other hand, I thought his takedowns were lacking for his
wrestling credentials although I think it was due to the large
size of Rashad Brooks. Toll in my opinion should waste little time
before moving to the 205 lb division where I feel he will become
a dominant fighter if he continues to be brought up properly and
not too quickly.
Dave “The
Polish Punisher” Kleczkowski (below, left) of Roufusport
in Milwaukee wasted no time taking down Toll's teammate Brad “Doomsday” Resop
off a right leg kick. Doomsday quickly reversed the Polish Punisher,
but it would be his fate as he was not quick enough to escape the
choreographed triangle choke from the bottom. Kleczkowski wins
at 1:29 in round one.
In
what had the makings of fight of the night, Roufusport's Donovan “Recon” Foley
(right) scored his third straight win since losing to Charles Brown
of FVGC in December of 2007. His Lightweight (-155 lbs) opponent,
Jay “The Silent Assassin” Ellis of Neutral Ground BJJ
in Milwaukee definitively dominated Foley for the round, but was
unable to answer the bell for second due to an ankle injury suffered
when Foley blocked a kick.
Patrick “Bear” Barrantine
of Team Gurgel in Dayton, (OH) came out to the Care Bears soundtrack
and raised many a eyebrow with his ring entrance, but he was all
business in the cage. He landed a body kick to Mike Delaney of
Chosen Few in Madison, (WI) which was immediately followed by a
takedown where Barrantine torqued a painful looking Americana from
side control causing Delaney to tap at :38 seconds of the Heavyweight
(- 265 lbs) match.
Gladiators
205 lb Light Heavyweight Championship:
The
much anticipated main event for the vacant Gladiators Fighting
Light Heavyweight 205 lb Championship turned out to be a short
and sweet fight for Rob “The Bad Boy of Bayview” Smith
of Roufusport. The first right hand Smith threw knocked out Justin “Bacon” Hutter
of Waukesha MMA and the three to four hammerfists to the side of
Hutter’s face afterward broke his jaw leaving the audience
to pick their's up off the ground.
Smith
becomes the new Gladiators Fighting 205 lb champion after the belt
was stripped from Rob “The Bullrider” Wince of Hammer
House. Wince’s last defense was against Marcus “The
Loudmouth Assassin” Hicks in Canada in April of 2007. Wince
was to defend his title against Eric Schafer at Gladiators Fighting
48.
According
to a post on Wisconsin Combat Sports from Gladiators Fighting promoter
Duke Roufus, retired MMA fighter Pat O’Malley of Chosen Few
and promoter of Madtown Throwdown in Madison stated that he wanted
to fight the winner of the fight. O’Malley’s teammates
Ron Faircloth and Damien Decorah would also make acceptable opponents
for the 205 lb strap. Other Wisconsin opponents in the 205 lb division
include Warren Kekahbah, Jesse Veium and Justin Lehmke.
